"It worries me how racist the Disney fandom is. Seriously, someone brings up the fact that Frozen has no POC and the racist people come out of the woodworks. It’s also upsetting that a lot of people don’t want more POC in the line up"
Because GOD FORBID a fairytale set in Scandinavia has white people. Le shock. Le horror.
And if you want more POC in the lineup, TALK WITH YOUR DAMN MONEY.
Buy Tiana merchandise. Buy Facilier merchandise. Buy Lilo and Nani merchandise. Buy Pocahontas and Mulan merchandise. Buy Jasmine merchandise. Buy Aladdin merchandise.
Because that’s what Disney and big corporations like it listen to.
On, and it’s cute how the character used here is Esmeralda, my personal favourite Disney character, who was kicked out of the lineup because she wasn’t popular enough, has ZERO merchandise, and has practically been forgotten except among the nerdiest of Disney nerds. Even the people working at the freaking Disney Store and at Disney theme parks don’t remember the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
But no, don’t remember that, bitch about how a film set in one of the whitest areas of Earth has no POC instead of showing support for the POC that have actually been a part of the Disney lineup.
But that’s what always happens - cry and whine and bitch and then when a character that meets your criteria comes along lose all interest after two seconds so you can cry and whine and bitch some more next time you find an excuse.
I love Frozen but it could have had more POC (and don’t pull the “but there are some at the ball” bullshit). Plus it’s a fairytale. Crazy magical stuff going on and they couldn’t have put some POC in there?
As for buying merch to show support for a character, I say go for it. Disney will base future characters (ie. Rapunzel and Anna) off of what sells because hey money.
HOWEVER do not say that this is the only way to get POC characters in the line up. Disney needs to work on diversity and it should be up to them to “cross” some “lines”, they’ve got the funds to fall back on if something goes wrong. Also keep in mind that not everyone has the means to “talk with their damn money”.
I’m sorry your favorite character was used as the picture but I don’t think that was intentional and what’s wrong about wanting something from the now? Yes show some love for past characters but as you stated there’s no merch because it didn’t sell well (someone didn’t talk with their money) so how are people to know? And maybe this person hasn’t seen the classics (which they should but that’s beside the point), why can’t they be mad that someone they can relate to hasn’t come around? Yes we have Tiana but until recently at my local Disney store she didn’t even have a section like the other princesses.
People are allowed to “bitch” when POC are pushed aside, left out, or never created. Again I’m sorry Esmeralda has been almost forgotten but that’s what happens to characters over time.
Because the only way to relate to people or care about fictional characters is via their appearance or ethnicity instead of their actions or character. Got it.
Well then, I should only care about Snow White because she’s the princess who looks like me. Or about Megaera because she comes from my part of the world.
Elsa, Esmeralda, Mulan, Tiana? Nope, not for me. No matter how much I admire or understand them. And the little black girl who was walking down the street a few weeks ago dressed up as Rapunzel, NO, she should only like Tiana. And Chinese girls should only like Mulan, and Hawaiians only Lilo, and Japanese and Indian and Nigerian and Thai little girls are shit out of luck.
Yes, there should be more POC in the Disney lineup. There are amazing fairytales and stories and myths and legends from all around the globe. Anansi, Coyote, Old Man Kangaroo, Pele. But using the excuse that “the new princess doesn’t have XYZ “correct” skin colour/ the new movie doesn’t have POC people!!1!!” as an excuse to appear more “social justice-y than thou” when most of these people have never picked up a V. S. Naipaul book or watched a Nollywood film is hypocritical, divisive and racist - it is continuing to divide people by skin colour and perpetuating bigotry in the name of “representation” instead of showing people how they can relate despite their differences. And it is also smacking of advocating tokenism, by adding a POC character to an overwhelmingly white setting just to say “hey look there’s a Black/ Chinese/ Whatever person there”. Not forgetting the Sami fauxtroversy as soon as the film was released, even when the Sami themselves approved of the film and kindly requested the hysterics crying “whitewashing” to be quiet.
No, don’t identify with Elsa because of her anxiety/ PTSD/ depression, or admire Esmeralda because of her bravery and compassion and commitment to equality, or admire Tiana’s ambition and work ethic, or Rapunzel’s hopefulness, or identify with Lilo’s loneliness and the bullying she gets from her peers. Only identify with people of XYZ skin colour. And then cry racism. Because THAT is not racist or divisive at all.
I don’t think any one ever said you couldn’t relate to someone because they don’t look like you but representation truly matters.
I have heard so many stories of little black girls having great interactions with Tiana face characters because the princess looked like them. And to get personal, though not involving race, why can’t we have a princess who’s a bit bigger? I keep my fingers crossed that someone who’s close to my size might be appearing soon but no such dice. I have issues with the “princess look”.
And yes I will agree that some take a very SJW approach and immediately write something off as horrible (Frozen for example) and I don’t agree with that. But voices should still be heard! What works for you might not work for someone else. Some people might actually like seeing someone from their own race have their own movie and be respected.
Tokenism shouldn’t be a crutch so why not make movies more or less equal representation.
The key words here being “have their own movie and being respected”.
Bashing on Frozen because “oh look, rme, another white princess, ugh, fuck Disney” has become a way just to look cool and alternative and equality-minded while at the same time being very likely to utterly ignore films with actual POC like Moana or Big Hero 6, and ignoring the fact that it presents a person with severe mental illness sympathetically without making her a villain or comic relief character or pitiable or saying “look at Elsa locking herself away and panicking and dissociating, what a crazyweirdofreakazoid” or making her automagically all better at the end (oh look, I found your ableism and mental illness erasure right there, because who cares if Elsa is the first Disney basketcase/ disabled princess as long as we keep complaining about her skin colour right?).
Demand that Disney makes more movies focusing on Aboriginal, Cree, Peruvian, Japanese, Nigerian, Afghan, Hindi, Balinese, pick your poison stories and characters. When those movies come out, show your support for them as much as possible. Blog, rave, post about them. Make sure that people learn about those mythologies and legends and stories. If Disney decides to turn them into Tarzan and have a Big White Hero take centre stage in those stories, or make another hot mess like Song of the South, break out the torches and pitchforks. I’ll provide the Zippo and the sharpening stone.
If they had made Tiana white, or Pocahontas, or had made Jasmine a blue-eyed blonde, I’d be right there crying fuckery along with you. But complaining about the lack of POC characters in an ultra-white setting like medieval Scandinavia or Scotland (where inclusion would be a shining example of tokenism) is missing the wood for the trees, and detracting attention from films with actual POC characters. Mulan? Pocahontas? Jasmine? Tiana? Esmeralda? Moana? Lilo? Kinai? The Lion King on Broadway? Who? Push for more POC narratives in Disney? Draw attention to good non-European/ non-white myths and stories and folklore that would make awesome movies? Nahhhhhh, let’s whine about Elsa and Anna and Rapunzel and Merida being white again instead. For the zillionth time.
Even when Princess and the Frog was coming out, people were complaining more about how “problematic” the Disney princess lineup is rather than showing their support for the damn movie itself. (Find me a Dr. Facilier mug, along with Esmeralda and Frollo mugs, and you can have my firstborn.) And of course Disney looked at the numbers and the buzz and said “screw it”. Because they’re a for-profit company and if a “product” (in this case character) isn’t making enough $$$$$ it’s getting cut. The Black Cauldron? Treasure Planet? Hunchback? Basil The Great Mouse Detective? Oliver And Co? Live action Disney (even a movie as venerated as Mary Poppins)? Not getting the attention of Pocahontas or Mulan or Aurora or Snow White so out they go, hit the road Jack.
I am betting you that these people complaining about lack of representation in Frozen will completely ignore Moana or BH6 or any future POC Disney movies if they happen, or complain about stupid crap like “why is Naveen a POC?!?! OMG, they’re erasing mixed relationships!!1!! Why does Ray exist?!?! OMG he’s a small annoying talking animal!!1!!” like they did in Princess and the Frog, only to once again whine about the next white Disney princess being white when the movie makes low numbers and Disney goes back to what makes a buck.
I guess I am just annoyed that I finally found a legit Disney “princess movie” with a princess I can care about and bashing it has become an Olympic sport under the excuse of “social justice” for Tumblr cred.
